Anton Volchenkov says his first choice was to stay in Ottawa.
The defenceman, who signed a six-year, $25.5 million free-agent deal to join the New Devils on July 1, told the Newark Star-Ledger he would have preferred to remain in Ottawa.
ďI would have liked to stay in Ottawa. My next choice was to find a good place for me,Ē Volchenkov told the Star-Ledger Thursday.
ď(The Senators) made me an offer, not good enough,Ē Volchenkov said. ďThatís why I didnít sign with Ottawa.
ďI talked to my wife. This is not too far from friends. I spent eight years in Ottawa. I have lots of friends there. This is tough, but itís part of the business. I donít like changing teams, but itís hockey.Ē
