MONTREAL — Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson had successful surgery to repair a “sports hernia” Tuesday in Montreal, the Ottawa Sun has learned.

He returned to Ottawa later in the day and is expected to fully recover in 4-6 weeks.

Alfredsson suffered the torn abdominal muscle injury before the Olympic break, but went on to represent Sweden at the Games, then returned to lead Ottawa’s charge back into the playoffs.

The 37-year old right winger missed one game in March due to the flu, and bounced back from the illness to score 20 points in the Senators’ final 16 games to claim his fourth team scoring title.

Alfredsson had eight points in six playoff games, giving him a share of the team lead with Matt Cullen.
