Sens quartet should attract Team Canada interest

The Moose could come calling for some Senators.

Team Canada GM Mark Messier has been waiting until the end of the first round of the playoffs to fill out his roster for next month’s world championship. A few Senators are on his wish list.

Mike Fisher will almost certainly get a call from Messier, who will also likely show interest in centre Jason Spezza, defenceman Chris Phillips and goalie Brian Elliiott. Spezza, Fisher and Phillips have all suited up for Canada in the past, but it’s no guarantee they’ll attend these worlds.

Canada still needs maybe four forwards, two or three defencemen and two goalies. Former Oilers coach Craig MacTavish will be behind the bench.

Knife awaits Alfie

Senators captain Daniel Alfredsson will almost certainly require surgery for the torn abdominal muscle he played with in the final month of the season.

Nobody is certain when the injury occurred, but Alfredsson was troubled by the problem throughout the run to the playoffs and the first-round series against the Penguins.

“What can you say? He’s our leader, he’s a warrior,” said Senators coach Cory Clouston. “He steps it up and plays through pain. He does a lot of good things both on and off the ice. He leads by example.”
