Senators ask Ottawa for all-star help
City has never hosted NHL all-star game

The Senators want to host the 2012 NHL all-star game.

Senators president Cyril Leeder has written to the city’s corporate services and economic development committee to bring the annual showcase of the league’s top talent to Ottawa.

A motion from city staff is expected to support the bid, which has also received backing from Ottawa Tourism, the NCC and the Ottawa Convention Centre.

The Senators have never hosted an NHL all-star game.

Leeder estimates the economic impact to Ottawa could be more than $30 million.

Also in the proposal is a joint Senators-NHL community legacy project with more than $100,000 in funding.

Leeder is hoping the city will provide financial support to offset costs related to pageantry and promotion of the event.

The 2012 all-star weekend is scheduled to take place Jan. 26-29.
