Taste of the farm

TIM BAINES, CHRIS STEVENSON, DON BRENNAN AND BRUCE GARRIOCH

BRUCE GARRIOCH: I could have sworn a week ago Bryan Murray said Karlsson wasn't going anywhere. Guess he meant on that day. I think it's positive he is staying in North America. Keeps him at arm's length. They are going to have injuries. He will be back.

DON BRENNAN: Part of what makes Karlsson a good player is the fact he knows he's one. You have to have confidence to play the game well, and he arrived here as a kid who both talks the talk and walks the walk. His confidence was going to take a beating at this rate, though. He's on pace for a minus-40 or something. He's also not as good as their sixth-best defenceman at the moment.

TIM BAINES: The Maple Leafs made a mistake by keeping Luke Schenn up last year. He should have gone back to junior. Bryan Murray is doing the wise thing.

CHRIS STEVENSON: Tim, you could make the argument the Leafs are making a mistake keeping Schenn up this year.

GARRIOCH: Karlsson's going to get a lot of playing time in the AHL. At least if he's in Bingo, they can keep an eye on him. If he went back overseas it wouldn't be as good a move. He is going to have a North American schedule with some long bus rides. Good learning experience.

STEVENSON: It looked like the kid was struggling physically and he didn't have the impact offensively that was hoped. Don's right. With Kuba back, Karlsson was their seventh defenceman and a 19-year-old needs to play.

GARRIOCH: The shocking revelation here: Don believes Kuba is better than somebody.

BRENNAN: Bingo ain't so bad. What's the name of that little pizzeria downtown, Chris? And there's a pretty good golf course too, as I remember. I'm just worried about Therese, his girlfriend. What's she gonna do when Erik's on a roadie to Hershey?

BAINES: The golf course is Hiawatha Links. A great place and it's cheap.

STEVENSON: I would recommend to young Erik that he immediately take Jeremy Yablonski for dinner at Ramo's. When you're a high-profile Euro rookie who weighs a buck-65, you can't have too many friends like Yabo.

GARRIOCH: Raymos is the proper spelling and it's closed. Karlsson is out of luck.

BRENNAN: Can I say one thing about the Leafs? I'm saddened they beat Anaheim the other night. I wanted to get some mileage out of the Jungle Jerome joke I heard on the radio the other morning. What's the difference between a triangle and the Leafs? A triangle has three points.

STEVENSON: Tim, just make it a square and the joke might be good for another three weeks.

BRENNAN: Stevenson is BRINGING IT today!

BAINES: Hey, enough with the negativity. The Leafs are on a roll. As a charter member of Leaf Nation, I've already made preliminary plans for the ticker-tape parade on Yonge St.

GARRIOCH: My prediction is Karlsson plays for Sweden in Saskatoon and then rejoins the Senators full of confidence in January.

BRENNAN: Chris, we're going to Montreal after the game Saturday afternoon. As it's the end of the month, the Shane Murphy Band is playing upstairs at Hurley's. That interest you at all?

STEVENSON: Of course. But it means you'll have to put down your chisel and write a little faster after the game or we'll miss last call.

GARRIOCH: Tim and I can't make it. We are going trick or treating.

BAINES: Bruce, you can be Fred Flintstone. I'll be Peter Griffin from Family Guy.

STEVENSON: That's not a stretch for you, Tim. You can fill those pants.

GARRIOCH: If you are Peter Griffin, I am going to go as Brian, the dog.

BAINES: Don can be Quagmire. Giggity, giggity.

BRENNAN: Yeah, no thanks. You guys get dressed up in dumb costumes. I'll just go to the bar and drink. Continental flight 2623 to Newark is on a small plane. Very small. Our buddy Sleepy Sly St. Laurent (Le Droit) wonders why I have to sit in the seat right next to him when there are so many others open. I am because ... okay, this is where you can complete the punchline, Chris, since you're en fuego today.

STEVENSON: So "Sleepy" has a shoulder upon which to rest his head? Because you just like to be a pain in the ass?

BRENNAN: For the first time ever, ladies and gentlemen, the No. 1 star of the Roundtable, la premiere etoile ... Chris Stevenson! (And you thought I just knew how to write: "Ou est la poubelle?")
