Jonathan Cheechoo arrived on the scene today.

After dealing disgruntled winger Dany Heatley to the San Jose Sharks, one piece to the puzzle arrived at Scotiabank Place, put on his No. 41 jersey and skated with Jason Spezza and Martin St. Pierre. The Senators are hoping Milan Michalek will be here by Wednesday.

“I’m happy and I’m really excited,” said Cheechoo. “Things happen for a reason. They wanted me here and I’m excited to be here. There were a lot of rumours. I didn’t really want to think about that. I just wanted to think about playing regardless of where I am.

“If you think about (the rumours) it will drive you crazy. I just wanted to get myself ready to go.”

The Senators liked what they saw in Cheechoo.

“He had a good practice. It’s not easy. It’s a little bit of a whirlwind emotionally,” said coach Cory Clouston. “I spoke with him before the practice and he’s really excited. He’s really looking forward to kind of getting with the team and his teammates and the structure of the team and I thought he had a really good practice.”

Goaltender Pascal Leclaire will start in the club’s exhibition opener against the Florida Panthers at the Halifax Metro Centre and will play 30 minutes.

“It will be nice to get back in there,” said Leclaire. “I will probably play more in the preseason than I have in the past.”
