Senators general manager Bryan Murray today told season ticket holders he is considering a drop-dead date for trading disgruntled sniper Dany Heatley.

During an online forum for team supporters to ask questions of the GM and get updates on the team, the controversy surrounding Heatley quickly moved to front and centre. Heatley asked the Senators for a trade about two-and-a-half months ago, but the Senators have not yet been able to put together a satisfactory deal.

As the start of training camp looms, the possibility increases that Heatley will have to report to a team for which he does not want to play with any longer. The former 50-goal scorer has said he will honour his contract, which will pay him $7.5 million this season.

"If we do have to trade Dany, the return will be a good one," Murray promised during the online fan forum. "Fairly soon here, we'll have to make a call (as to) will he come back and play for the Ottawa Senators.

"I'd like to have a cut off time."

The demand put Murray on the hot seat all summer. He did have a tentative deal with the Edmonton Oilers, but Heatley has a no-trade clause in his contract and refused to go to the Oilers.

"This is not our doing," Murray added of Heatley's demand. "We like this guy. It's been a tough summer."

Otherwise, Murray said "there's nothing new" in his efforts to get Heatley out of Ottawa.
