Janis Foligno, the mother of Ottawa Senators forward Nick Foligno, has died.

Few details are available, but the OHL Sudbury Wolves hockey club issued a release today announcing her death on Monday night.

Janis was the wife of longtime NHL player Mike Foligno, who has most recently been with the Wolves as coach and general manager. She reportedly had been suffering from cancer.

"Janis was a wonderful wife, mother, aunt and friend," says the Wolves' release. "She was a great person to know, to talk to and to be with. She was a great friend of the game of hockey as well."

Janis was born and raised in Sudbury as a member of the Giacomin family; her uncle Eddie Giacomin is recognized as one of the NHL's greatest goaltenders.

She is also survived by Nick's siblings, Cara, Lisa and Marcus -- who was recently drafted by the Buffalo Sabres.

Funeral arrangements have yet to be finalized.
