HOW THEY SCORED

FIRST PERIOD

1. SABRES: With a delayed penalty about to be called and an extra attacker on the ice, Tallinder fires the puck across the ice to Lydman at the right point and he blasts it by Elliott. Sabres 1, Sens 0

2. SABRES: With the Senators scrambling in their zone, the puck goes to Vanek in the right-wing circle. When Elliott challenges him, he fires it to an unchecked Pominville at the back door for an empty-net goal. Sabres 2, Sens 0

SECOND PERIOD

3. SENS: After Bell does all the work to get the puck in the Sabres zone, Neil centres to Spezza from behind the net, who feeds Heatley in his usual spot at the goaltender's left. Sabres 2, Sens 1

4. SENS: On the power play, Alfredsson feeds the puck through the slot to Bell in the right-wing circle and he fires the puck by Tellqvist. Sens 2, Sabres 2

THIRD PERIOD

5. SENS: Working on a 2-on-1 during a power play, Spezza does a beautiful job of saucering a pass over a Sabres defenceman to Alfredsson, who fires the puck into the open side. Sens 3, Sabres 2

6. SENS: Again on the power play, Bell gets the puck in the high slot and fires a shot high into the net. Sens 4, Sabres 2

Senators

The Senators were without F Mike Comrie, who fell ill between practice Monday and last night's game. Christoph Schubert was in the lineup in Comrie's place ... Sabres tough guy Andrew Peters and Senators agitator Jarkko Ruutu -- facing each other for the first time since Ruutu bit Peters on the thumb Jan. 6 -- exchanged words at one point after a whistle ... The 13 shots taken by the Sabres were the fewest the Senators surrendered in a game this season.
