Alex Auld is going back into the Senators' net tonight to face the NHL's top team.

And Ottawa's former No. 1 goalie has been placed on NHL re-entry waivers, meaning any team in the NHL can grab Martin Gerber for half the remaining $850,000 on his contract this season.

First, to tonight's game. Coach Cory Clouston revealed this morning he will stick with Auld as the San Jose Sharks make their only visit to Scotiabank Place this season. Auld, who made 41 stops in a 4-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes Tuesday, will make back-to-back starts at home for the first time in two months.

Clouston said the Sharks are going to offer a big challenge.

"The big thing for us is not to give them anything," said Clouston. "We're going to have to come out and make sure we're strong."

The Sharks come into Ottawa smarting after a 4-1 loss to Western Conference rivals the Detroit Red Wings last night in Detroit.

The Senators won't make any changes to the lineup which played against Carolina, meaning defencemen Brendan Bell, Alex Picard and Christoph Schubert will be healthy scratches.

Game time at Scotiabank Place is 7:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast on Sportsnet.

The other major announcement today is that 34-year-old Gerber has been waived. Sent to the club's AHL affiliate in Binghamton last month, Gerber iss in the final year of a contract paying him $3.7 million US this season. The team is hoping another NHL squad will want him as insurance for the playoffs.

Should Gerber get picked up, the team that claims him and the Senators would each be responsible for half his remaining salary of about $850,000.

Murray confirmed yesterday he's had a couple of calls about Gerber.

"There's limited interest from a couple of teams I've spoken with," said Murray yesterday. "What I'd like to do is put him on re-entry and find out if there's a market."

Gerber has a 6-6-0 record with a 2.69 goals-against average and .918 save percentage with Binghamton.
