The Senators are going to inject more youth into the lineup tonight against the high-flying New Jersey Devils.

That and the return of injured defenceman Anton Volchenkov means two veterans are going to get seats in the press box.

Both defenceman Jason Smith and winger/defenceman Christoph Schubert will be watching tonight as the Senators tackle the Devils, 7:30 p.m., at Scotiabank Place.

The game features two of the hottest teams in the NHL heading into last weekend's all-star break, with Jersey winning five straight games and the Sens' only loss in their past four being in an OT shootout.

Smith, who is making $2.7 million this season, will be a healthy scratch as Volchenkov returns to the lineup after missing the past eight games with a shoulder injury.

"Obviously surprised and disappointed," said Smith, who was clearly frustrated after today's morning skate. "You become a player in this game to play games and to help a team have success."

The recall of young centre Peter Regin from the club's AHL affiliate in Binghamton is the reason Schubert will also be out of the lineup.

"I think the plan here, with all these games coming, was spot him in," coach Craig Hartsburg said today of Regin's recall.

"With Volchenkov coming in, we have a lot of defensive guys."

The Senators are expected to announce later today that goalie Martin Gerber will return to Binghamton. Rookie Brian Elliott gets the start in net, his sixth straight since his own recall from Binghamton.
