MONTREAL -- Martin Gerber is officially in limbo.

The Senators goaltender cleared NHL waivers today at noon and will likely be summoned to meet with Ottawa GM Bryan Murray Monday to decide what the club is going to do with him down the road.

Gerber, 34, had been on a conditioning stint in Binghamton that ended Thursday.

Gerber is in the final season of a three-year deal that pays him $3.7 million this season. At that price, the Senators don't have many options with him, but here's what they could do:

  • Put him on re-entry waivers and hope that another team picks him up at half-price, which means the Senators would be on the hook for about $750,000 for the rest of the season.
  • Send him back to the AHL's Binghamton Sens to finish out the year.
  • See if there's a team in Europe willing to pick up part of his contract for the balance of the season.
