Alfie: Avery's latest act 'immature'

Sean Avery crossed the line. But it didn't seem to surprise the Senators.

Avery faces a suspension in a meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman this morning after telling reporters he was surprised with the number of players around the league -- which includes Dion Phaneuf dating actress Elisha Cuthbert -- going out with his "sloppy seconds."

"It wasn't a surprise," said Senators winger Jarkko Ruutu. "If you want people to respect you off the ice, you better behave off the ice. Stuff that happens on the ice, stays on the ice. I think that's been the code forever. You've got to be smart with what you say. No one can dispute (he crossed the line)."

Ruutu said Avery was just striving for attention.

"There's a lot of things I could say and I've never said them out loud in the media. All he wants is attention."

"It's immature. That's how I would describe it," said captain Daniel Alfredsson.

It doesn't sound like Stars coach Dave Tippett wants Avery back, saying: "I try to build a team where players play for each other and care for each other and play with continuity. I find it hard to believe that Sean can come back in that dressing room and find that continuity again."

Would Patrick Roy make a good coach for the Colorado Avalanche?
  Yes, he's perfect
  No, he's not ready
  Bring him to Montreal!
