Dean McAmmond is back with the Senators.

But he is going to have to wait to make his return.

Troubled by a throat infection that has kept him out for a week, McAmmond skated for the first time this morning, but won't suit up tonight against the Atlanta Thrashers at Scotiabank Place.

The Senators will have winger Ryan Shannon (post-concussion) back against the Thrashers. Defenceman Christoph Schubert will skate on the back end because Alex Picard is still bothered by a sore wrist. The challenge for the Senators is shutting down Ilya Kovalchuk.

"His skills. His strength and his size make him much like (Alex) Ovechkin. He's a handful," said coach Craig Hartsburg. "Our defence is going to have to be really good one-on-one because he's a big strong guy that's got great skills."

Coming off a 4-2 loss to the Isles on the weekend, the Senators want to get back to playing well.

"It's important to come out strong. Our effort needs to be really good today. We've got to force them to play really hard for 60 minutes," said captain Daniel Alfredsson.

The Senators will make one big change on the lines by placing the struggling Antoine Vermette with Mike Fisher and Shean Donovan.

The Thrashers, who are 1-6-1 in their last eight games, are coming off a 5-4 loss to the Montreal Canadiens Tuesday night. Atlanta bussed to Ottawa immediately after the game.

Alex Auld will make his eighth straight start for the Senators while Johan Hedberg is expected to return to the Atlanta net.
