4 on 1: Ottawa Sun hockey experts debate the issues of the day

BRUCE GARRIOCH: Of course they do. But the people of Ottawa got what they wanted. The thing is there was no way he was going to stay with the Senators and get $6.5 million per season for six years. Not a chance. But why do you think they're looking for a puck-moving defenceman?

TIM BAINES: Yeah, with all due respect to Redden, he wasn't worth the long-term investment. So while fans are scraping by and saving their pennies to see an NHL game, guys like Redden, who is not an elite NHL defenceman, load up their piggybanks.

DON BRENNAN: Is Redden good enough to be on this team? Of course, he'd still be a Top 4 blueliner and the best power-play quarterback they have -- Fil Kuba included. But no, they do not miss his salary-cap hit one bit. How the Rangers could justify signing him to that kind of long-term money is beyond me.

CHRIS STEVENSON: There's a lot of different levels to that question. Do they miss his presence? Yes. He would be playing 24 minutes a game for these guys. They wouldn't have been able to afford him, but that's another question.

GARRIOCH: So we all agree. This is a riveting discussion.

BRENNAN: I think they miss Zdeno Chara a lot more. Right, Mucks?

BAINES: Is Chara worth the money that he's being paid? Yes. Chara is better, a guy that would be the kingpin of the Sens defence right now. I know it may be simplifying the issue a bit, but it still boils down to the fact that they decided that Redden was more valuable to them than Chara. It was a horrible decision then. And a horrible decision now.

GARRIOCH: Redden is prone to making mistakes. Of course, they should have kept Chara. They didn't. We aren't going to have this argument, are we?

STEVENSON: If they had signed Chara, then one of Heatley, Spezza or Alfredsson wouldn't be here now. I would say a lot of fans right now would trade one of those guys for Chara straight up. What do you think?

BRENNAN: I say Chara is going to be hoisting the Cup this year. Is that anything?

BAINES: You just say that because you sleep with your ratty old Bobby Orr pyjamas, the ones with the slippers attached.

STEVENSON: Spoken like a true Bruins fan, Don.

GARRIOCH: Use a big picture of Chara with this one!

BRENNAN: And superimpose him holding Lord Stanley's coveted mug.

GARRIOCH: I actually agree Chara has a good chance this year. The Bruins just keep winning. Of course that could all change if they face Montreal in the first round.

STEVENSON: Redden is a good defenceman whose time was up in Ottawa as soon as somebody like the Rangers was ready to give him the money he's making now. He could help the Senators, yes, but not for about $2 million more a season than he would be worth to the Senators.

BRENNAN: I think they miss Redden in the room. I think he was one of the leaders and was one of their more popular guys. They also miss him on the ice, deteriorating skills or not. But we would have ripped Bryan Murray to shreds if he would have signed him to the kind of deal he got from the StRangers.

GARRIOCH: He should have waived his no-trade clause last year and saved himself the headache.

BRENNAN: What headache? From staring at all those zeros on the contract? Or from deciding on what multi-million home in New York to buy for him and his pretty wife? Yeah, my heart bleeds. I'm hungry. That 5 a.m. post-Hurleys smoked meat we had Wednesday morning is starting to wear off. New topic --what's the best late-night snack spot in Montreal? I vote Dunn's, although that little place next to the Forum Chris Nilan took us to last year was pretty good, too, eh, Chris?

BAINES: Is Dunn's giving you free smoked meat sandwiches for promoting them? You used the same line in our last Digital Faceoff. There's obviously something in it for you -- you would never give them a free plug. Hey, tubby, forget about filling your stomach and answer the question.

BRENNAN: But you didn't use it last time. And I think it's a great topic. One that all of us wouldn't agree on -- unlike the ones you throw on the table.
