Rising to the defence ... is it a problem?

I really think they've got add a puck-moving defenceman. We know how easy those guys are to find.

Don Brennan

Waiting for you guys to say something smart is like waiting for snow to melt ... The Senators' defence last season was a collection of Orrs, Harveys and Coffeys compared to this group. Each year, the Stanley Cup champions get 200-plus points from their blueline. The Senators will be lucky to get 130 from theirs this season. Case closed.

Bruce Garrioch

Is this coming from the same person who couldn't stand the way Jacques Martin coached? Seriously, this argument is a little rich. People wanted a team that wasn't stifled offensively. They got it.

Chris Stevenson

Which team in the East is going to have 200 points from the blue line, Don? If that's the case, just give the Cup to a team in the West right now. Why bother playing?

Tim Baines

I guess my concern is speed, or lack of it, on the back end. With an increasing emphasis on team speed, opposing forwards are going to be dancing around our guys like it's the Ice Capades. I like the fact that the Senators have added heart-and-soul guys, just not sure they're going to be able to cut down the scoring chances.

Don Brennan

Tim, I thought we were talking about the Senators. Your "our guys" remark makes me think you're referring to your Maple Leafs. They don't have a very good defence either ...

Tim Baines

Leafs? What Leafs? The Senators are the hometown team. Let's get back to that 200-plus-point expectation ... you can't be serious. Do you just say things to be controversial, or are you really that dopey?

Chris Stevenson

Maybe that could be our next question for the roundtable ... Don Brennan. An idiot savant or just ...

Don Brennan

Hey, all I know is that Bryan Murray was adamant he needed to add an offensive defenceman this off-season ... and he didn't, while losing two of them. It's early, but I'm unimpressed with Kuba, and I think Picard and Lee are a little green to be on a "contending" team. I'll keep Phillips, Volchenkov and Smith as my sixth. You can have the rest.

Bruce Garrioch

This is getting dumb. The reality is they aren't getting 200 points from this defence. The forwards are strong. The Senators just need to keep the puck out of their net.

Chris Stevenson

If the power play struggles, the heat will be on Murray to get help on the point. So far, it's been decent.

Don Brennan:

I predict that by the end of the season, their Top 6 defence will consist of three guys who aren't here now.
