Sens look to move forward

With coach Craig Hartsburg in place, Senators GM Bryan Murray has turned his focus to adding some players.

Besides preparing for this weekend's draft at Scotiabank Place, Murray will be looking to make some deals when his NHL counterparts descend on Ottawa.

With potential unrestricted free agents Chris Kelly, Cory Stillman, Shean Donovan, Martin Lapointe and Randy Robitaille set to walk away, Murray could be facing a situation where he has to replace five forwards.

B'S MURRAY ON RADAR?

Murray has held talks with several GMs about a number of forwards. It's believed Bruins winger Glen Murray and Flyers centre R.J. Umberger are two forwards that interest the Senators.

There has been speculation in Boston that Murray, 35, who is going into the final year of a contract that pays him $4.15 million (all terms US), will be bought out by the Bruins. But with a cap hit of $1.8 million a season for the next two years, the Bruins would prefer to trade Murray.

The indications are Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli has been shopping Murray around to see if there's a team willing to bite by offering a cheaper, younger player. The Kings, Sharks and Senators were among a group of teams interested last season.

Not only could Murray help if he's able to regain his scoring touch -- he had only 17 goals and 13 assists in 63 games last season -- he would also bring veteran leadership -- something that many around the NHL felt was missing in Ottawa last season.

As for Umberger, the talk is Flyers GM Paul Holmgren is looking to land a defenceman and has held discussions with Ottawa about Andrej Meszaros.

The Senators have held discussions with Meszaros and his agent, Ritch Winter, but Bryan Murray hasn't had a lot of luck. It's believed Meszaros is seeking an average of $3.5 million a season -- a figure that might not fit into Ottawa's salary structure.

The sides have agreed to keep talking, but if they can't reach a deal, Meszaros could become trade bait.
