Walker won't butt out

PITTSBURGH -- Carolina Hurricanes winger Scott Walker didn't use his head properly and now he's paying the price.

Before being suspended one game by NHL VP Colin Campbell, Walker came to his own defence for his head-butt on Senators C Mike Fisher at the end of a fight in Wednesday's 6-0 Ottawa victory.

"It's tough to say (what happened)," said Walker, who will miss tonight's game vs. Calgary and forfeit $13,398.68 in pay. "The play is going on and I don't know who's on top of me. I don't know if it's (Chris) Neil or (Brian) McGrattan or whoever.

"I get up, and start fighting and I'm hitting the guy's shield the whole time. At the end of the fight I knew I was cut, so I was trying to keep my head down and ended up head-butting him."

Walker needed six stitches to close the cut below his left eye. He said Fisher should have gotten an instigator penalty, but it was Walker who started the melee by bumping G Martin Gerber.

"How much more do you have to do to instigate?" Walker asked. "He's on top of me."

Fisher was upset that he chipped one tooth and will likely lose another, which is why Senators GM Bryan Murray called Campbell.

Coach John Paddock was surprised by Walker's actions.

"He's an honest player," said Paddock. "He was frustrated and his team was frustrated. He bumped the goalie for no reason, he took a terrific walloping in the fight and he just reacted to it."

Goalie gift: Sidney Crosby and the Penguins could be getting a goalie for Christmas with Marc-Andre Fleury sidelined for up to two months with a high ankle sprain. While the Penguins maintain they have confidence in Dany Sabourin and retread Ty Conklin, league source say GM Ray Shero has been sniffing around to see what's available on the market.

Talk is the Canadiens are willing to move Cristobal Huet, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. Sens GM Murray said last week that Ray Emery and Martin Gerber had better learn to get along, but it's believed the Senators are willing to listen to offers.

Emery back up: Emery was able to dress as the backup last night after leaving in the first period vs. the Hurricanes. Paddock said Emery complained about a sore hip following practice last Sunday. Murray told the Team 1200 that after missing training camp following wrist surgery, Emery has to start spending more time doing "extra work" in the gym, "stretching."

SID THE ROCK STAR: Veteran LW Gary Roberts has never seen anything like the attention lavished on Crosby during the Penguins' western swing.

"Everybody was talking about whether it was Bon Jovi, Sidney Crosby or the president coming to town." The Kid took it all in stride: "I've played everywhere now and it was what I expected."
