Peter Schaefer has a great stick, but yesterday he carried a big bat.

The Senators winger, among several players to take batting practice before yesterday's Lynx season finale, homered to right field to put some of his teammates to shame.

"Hey, I got lucky to put one out," said Schaefer.

Schaefer, along with teammates Chris Neil, Serge Payer, Ray Emery, Patrick Eaves and Joe Corvo, are gearing up for the start of the NHL season next month.

While training camp doesn't open until Sept. 13, when the team gets together for a golf tournament, players have been skating regularly at the Bell Sensplex to get ready for the start of the year.

"We're pretty excited. We've got a different look this year and we've got some different faces, but I think we're excited about the start of the new season," said Neil.

"We want to get back at it. A lot of the guys are in town and we're skating every day getting ready for the season. We want to have some fun and we're looking forward to the challenge."
