Sharks might not be Sens' only option for Havlat

Senators winger Martin Havlat is a hot commodity.

NHL sources told the Sun last night that "five or six" teams have held discussions with Ottawa GM John Muckler about dealing for Havlat, who can become a restricted free agent on Saturday.

While the Senators' first preference would be to have Havlat sign a multi-year deal so they can trade him to the Sharks for goalie Vesa Toskala, league sources confirmed Muckler has other options, including dealing Havlat for another forward.

The Sharks are reluctant to deal for Havlat because he's said he'll only sign a one-year deal so that he can become an unrestricted free agent following the 2006-07 campaign.

The Senators, too, don't want to bring Havlat back this fall armed with a one-year deal only to lose him next summer.

The possibility also exists he could sign a Group II deal with another team -- and the Senators would receive compensation -- but it's more likely he'll be dealt.
