Sens heavy Weight contenders

MONTREAL -- Doug Weight is playing a wait and see game in the Show Me State.

The Blues centre, set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer, isn't seeking a trade before the March 9 deadline, but if he's not going to be re-signed he might welcome a move to a contender.

Weight's agent Steve Bartlett told the Sun he's had no discussions with Blues GM Larry Pleau and it's up to St. Louis to approach him if they want to do something.

But, with the Blues' ownership in a state if disarray, it's expected the club will try to peddle Weight, who is making $5.2 million (all terms US), to the highest bidder.

Weight, who is armed with a no-trade clause, can choose where he'd like to go. It's believed the Senators, Flames, Oilers, Stars, Red Wings, Rangers and Leafs would all be interested.

"There is no question that Doug is in control of the situation," said Bartlett. "But he's not seeking a trade and we haven't had any discussions with the Blues about going anywhere else. Right now, he's happy in St. Louis and he's concentrating all his efforts on helping that team be successful.

"If, at some point, the Blues fall out of the playoff race, I'm certain that teams would be interested in a player like Doug and I know he could help a contender. I would think, at that point, he would certainly be interested in having a chance to win a Stanley Cup."

If you think Bartlett is choosing his words carefully, he is because Weight is still with the Blues. With St. Louis going nowhere fast, it's doubtful they'd be able to re-sign him this summer.

The Senators would like to add depth at centre and Weight is on a list of potential candidates that GM John Muckler keeps. Another player to watch is Florida centre Olli Jokinen, who is also in the last year of his contract.
