Eaves could hit the road to help Sens

It looks like Patrick Eaves is going to know Interstate 81 pretty well.

The rookie, who made his NHL debut Tuesday night in Montreal, could be on his way back to Ottawa from Binghamton for tomorrow night's game against the Boston Bruins.

It doesn't look like Senators forwards Vaclav Varada and Mike Fisher will be available.

Varada, nursing a knee injury, skated with his teammates again yesterday, but probably needs some more conditioning.

Fisher said he won't play after straining his shoulder in a collision with Toronto's Eric Lindros Monday night.

Eaves looked fine in his debut, playing just more than 11 minutes and winding up even in the plus-minus stats on the night.

SPEZZA FIT TO BE TIED: Senators centre Jason Spezza didn't get a point in a game for the first time this season against Montreal, but that didn't stop him from moving into a tie for the NHL scoring lead yesterday. Spezza was awarded a retroactive assist, after another review of a goal, to bring his total to three goals and five assists after four games. If Spezza is battling for the scoring title come December, will that get him consideration for Team Canada and the Olympics in February? "You just have to make it so they have to take you," said Spezza. "That's my only option after not getting invited to the (orientation) camp (in August)."

SHOOTOUT FIGHT: Senators coach Bryan Murray said yesterday he will go with the players who have scored in the game for the shootout whenever necessary. So, you knew this question was coming: If tough guy Brian McGrattan gets one, does he go in the shootout? "I'd say, 'Brian, you and I will stand together and watch it,' " joked Murray.

AIRWAVES: As expected, long-time Senators broadcasters Dean Brown and Gord Wilson will handle the 20 Senators games on the A-Channel this season. The Senators made it official yesterday. When the pair are on the tube, Dave Schrieber and former Senator Shaun Van Allen will handle the play-by-play and colourman duties respectively on the Team 1200 radio broadcast.
