Varada could force roster decision

The Senators could be getting ready to shuffle the deck.

Senators coach Bryan Murray told reporters yesterday he'll find out this morning if winger Vaclav Varada has been cleared to play Saturday against the Boston Bruins and if that's the case there will be changes.

With Varada ready to return from a sprained right MCL that was supposed to keep him out for six weeks when he was injured on Sept. 18, the Senators are going to have to clear some money off the deck.

The Senators also have to find out how much longer winger Mike Fisher is going to be out with a shoulder injury he suffered Monday against Toronto. He told the Sun he expects to miss the game vs. Boston while winger Peter Schaefer -- who cut his ear on a high stick from Radek Bonk Tuesday -- is expected to play.

"We're likely going to have to do something. I would expect that Varada is going to get clearance to play and we're going to get some kind of indication on where Fisher is at," said Murray.

The Senators' options are limited if they decide to make a roster move. They could try to slide extra defenceman Christoph Schubert through waivers or trade him. Or they could send tough guy Brian McGrattan, who wouldn't require waivers, to the minors until they decide they need another tough guy in the lineup.
