NOTES:

Senators LW Vaclav Varada -- sidelined with a right MCL strain -- has started skating in the last couple of days and is expected to practice with the club this morning. Coach Bryan Murray indicated it might be realistic to think that Varada will play Oct. 21st against in Tampa. "I know he's made some good progress and he's a way ahead of schedule," said Murray ... Senators D Christoph Schubert was a healthy scratch for the opener ... The Sabres, who scored a 4-1 victory over the Boston Bruins on Friday at home, had travel problems and didn't arrive at their downtown hotel until 2 a.m. yesterday ... Murray, behind the bench for just his second game since being hired by the club in June, 2004, said he wasn't expecting a huge turnout from his hometown of Shawville. "There might be one or two people (at the Corel Centre). I don't think anybody has requested a bus," said Murray ... The Sabres scratches last night included G Mika Noronen and Ds Jeff Jillson and Dmitri Kalinin, who is still hampered by a sore groin.
