Several rookie Senators played the numbers game yesterday after finding out they had made the team.

Winger Brandon Bochenski will drop the number 56 he wore in camp in favour of No. 10, which he wore in Binghamton of the AHL last year.

"Fifty-six is okay, but I'm not a football player," he said.

Tough guy Brian McGrattan will drop No. 46 to wear No. 16 and Chris Kelly is opting for No. 22 over 49 in honour of a former Senator who made a good impression on him. "I played here with Shaun Van Allen and he was a great guy. He taught me a bit and I'd like to keep the tradition going," said Kelly.

MURRAY LIKES SENS' POTENTIAL

Senators coach Bryan Murray said he thinks his young team, already picked as a Stanley Cup contender, has the potential to show a lot of improvement over the course of the season. "We should be a better team at Christmas time," he said. "We're young at the most important spots (up front) and our better (defencemen) are just the right age."
