Chara's in line for 'A' promotion

MONTREAL -- The Big Z could be getting a letter from Senators coach Bryan Murray.

And this one will likely be an 'A'.

Murray has no plans to change the captain's 'C' worn by Daniel Alfredsson and the 'A' on defenceman Wade Redden, but the club has to add another assistant before the season opener Wednesday.

With the free-agent departure of Curtis Leschyshyn, Murray has been floating the 'A' around to players such as defencemen Zdeno Chara and Chris Phillips, and centre Mike Fisher during training camp.

Giving the 'A' to Chara, a runnerup for the Norris Trophy as the NHL's top defenceman in the 2003-04 season, makes the most sense. He has emerged as a physical presence on the ice and isn't afraid to speak up.

"I'm not going to take a vote and I'm not going to change the captain either," Murray said. "We need to add another 'A' and that's probably something I will address with the team (tomorrow).

"I'm not going to take a vote with the players or anything. I've spoken with Daniel Alfredsson and Wade Redden about the subject, and I'd like to add one more player to that group. I will take what they said into consideration, but I've basically already decided on the guy I want to go with in that group."

But, just because three players will wear the letters, Murray wants a group of players to contribute to the club's leadership.

"I've got a group of five players in that we've kind of chosen as our leadership group," he said. "If there are any problems, I want them dealt with in the room."
