TORONTO -- New Jersey Devils defenseman Anton Volchenkov was suspended by the National Hockey League for three games without pay on Wednesday for his elbow to the head of Carolina forward Zach Boychuk.

The incident occurred during the second period of Tuesday's game in New Jersey and Volchenkov was assessed a minor penalty for elbowing.

"While he has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident previously and it is fortunate that his opponent returned to play in the game, Volchenkov delivered an illegal blow to the head," said NHL discipline czar Colin Campbell.

The 28-year-old Moscow native will forfeit $68,548.38 in salary, which automatically goes to the Players' Assistance Emergency Fund.

A former first round pick of the Senators in 2000, Volchenkov will miss games on February 10 at Toronto, February 11 against San Jose and February 16 with Carolina. He will be eligible to return on February 18 when the Devils take on cross-river rivals the New York Rangers.
