NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils defenceman Matt Corrente suffered a broken left hand during Wednesday's game against San Jose.

The Devils did not disclose how the injury occurred or how long Corrente would be sidelined. The 22-year-old blueliner was involved in a second-period fight with Sharks forward Ryan Clowe, but played in the third period.

In six games for the Devils this season, Corrente has three assists with 31 penalty minutes and a minus-one rating.

The Devils have recalled defenceman Tyler Eckford from their AHL affiliate in Albany under emergency conditions. Eckford had one assist in three games for New Jersey last season and this year with Albany has two assists in six games.

New Jersey also recalled left wing Alexander Vasyunov from Albany. Vasyunov made his NHL debut against Buffalo on Oct. 23 when Ilya Kovalchuk was a controversial healthy scratch.
