Panthers send McCabe packing
By Sports Network
NEW YORK - The New York Rangers have acquired veteran defenseman Bryan McCabe from the Florida Panthers in exchange for forward Tim Kennedy and a future third-round pick.
McCabe recorded five goals and 22 points in 48 games this season for Florida, which acquired him from Toronto prior to the start of the 2008-09 campaign.
The 35-year-old Ontario native has tallied 143 goals and 522 points over 1,116 career games since breaking into the NHL with the Islanders in 1995-96. He has also skated for the Canucks and Blackhawks during his 15-year career.
"Bryan McCabe adds an established veteran presence to our young defensive corps," president and general manager Glen Sather said. "He can help provide offense with his strong shot on the power play, and his versatility allows him to play either the left or right side effectively. Bryan also brings outstanding leadership qualities, having served as Florida's captain for the past two seasons."
Kennedy has not played in the league this season after recording 10 goals and 16 assists in 78 games for his hometown Buffalo Sabres a year ago.
