The New York Islanders signed defenceman Steve Staios, 38, to a one-year, $800,000 contract Friday.

Staios, who attended the Islanders training camp on a tryout, appeared in each of their three pre-season games.

"The one thing I tried to tell Steve was that he was going to get an honest shot," coach Jack Capuano said on the team website. "He came in, he worked hard and he earned a spot on our hockey team."

The native of Hamilton, Ont., has 56 goals and 156 assists in 936 NHL games with Boston, Vancouver, Atlanta, Edmonton and Calgary.

After benching Brad Richards should the New York Rangers eventually just buy him out?
  Yes.
  Might be a good idea.
  No.
  Not sure.
