Tavares rather be in playoffs than worlds

UNIONDALE, N.Y. — If asked, he definitely will go.

But, given the choice, John Tavares would rather not represent Canada at the upcoming world hockey championship.

It has nothing to do with being short on national pride.

It has everything to do with the NHL playoffs.

Simply put, if Tavares is at the worlds, it means his Islanders are not in the post-season.

“That’s the main goal,” he said. “That’s the focus.

“If it doesn’t work out, well, I would be proud and flattered to be invited (by Hockey Canada) for Team Canada.”

Tavares scored seven goals in seven games for Canada at last year’s worlds in Germany. This year’s tournament runs from April 29-May 15 in Slovakia.

Are you bummed Canada lost to Sweden in the quarterfinals at the world hockey championship?
