Nabokov still not reporting to Islanders

Uniondale, NY – New York Islanders general manager Garth Snow reportedly reached out to the newly acquired Evgeni Nabokov on Sunday, but the goaltender has still not joined the team.

Nabokov was claimed off waivers by the Islanders on Saturday, a day after he agreed to a one-year contract with the Detroit Red Wings.

The Islanders own the second fewest points in the Eastern Conference thus far, and the 35-year-old goalie has chosen not to report to the club since its not a Stanley Cup contender.

Snow, according to a report on NHL.com, contacted Nabokov on Sunday, but the Russian has still not joined the team.

Nabokov, who starred for the past 10 years with the San Jose Sharks, began this season in Russia's Kontinental Hockey League after he was not offered a contract by an NHL team last summer as a free agent. He was released from a reported four-year, $24 million deal in Russia last month, but his stint overseas necessitated his placing on waivers.
