UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders have placed both goaltender Rick DiPietro and defenseman Mike Mottau on injured reserve.

DiPietro, 29, has been hindered by swelling in his right knee. The 29-year-old is 4-6-4 with a 3.68 goals-against average and .880 save percentage in 14 games this season.

The top overall pick in the 2000 draft out of Boston University, DiPietro was limited to just 13 games over the previous two seasons because of knee problems.

Mottau, once a rival of DiPietro at Boston College, will miss the remainder of the 2010-11 campaign with a torn labrum in his right hip. He collected three assists in 20 games, but had been out for the club's last 10 games due to an eye injury.
