UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders bolstered their blueline on Tuesday by agreeing to a two-year contract with veteran defenceman Mike Mottau.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

"Mike is a solid puck-moving defenceman who will bring more experience to our blueline," said Islanders general manager Garth Snow.

The signing of Mottau was made necessary when top defenceman Mark Streit suffered a freak shoulder injury during a scrimmage on Saturday and will be out indefinitely.

Mottau, 32, played the last three seasons with the New Jersey Devils. He skated in 79 games and tallied a pair of goals and 16 assists during the 2009-10 season.

For his career, Mottau has compiled seven goals and 53 points in six seasons, spanning 258 games with the Rangers, Calgary and Devils.
