UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- The New York Islanders signed captain Doug Weight to a one-year contract on Tuesday.

Financial terms of the deal were not announced.

"Doug has played an important role in helping to develop our young players over the past two seasons and we're excited to see him continue his historic career on Long Island," Islanders general manager Garth Snow said.

The 39-year-old centrE tallied one goal and 16 assists in 36 games in 2009-10 before having his season cut short after he tore the rotator cuff and labrum in his left shoulder.

Weight will be entering his third year with the Islanders and 20th in his illustrious career. The four-time NHL All-Star has registered 11 goals and 44 assists over 89 contests in his first two seasons with the club.

A second-round pick of the Rangers in 1990, Weight has 276 goals and 748 assists over 1,220 games, which has included stints with Edmonton, St. Louis, Carolina, Anaheim and the Islanders.
