The Maple Leafs talk about being a tougher team next year, but the New York Islanders have the jump on Eastern Conference opponents.

The team website yesterday boasted the signing of Joel (The Wrecker) Rechlicz to a three-year entry level contract. The Wisconsin-born right winger had one goal, four assists and 440 penalty minutes in 117 Quebec junior, U.S. junior and minor pro games.

The 20-year-old Rechlicz is 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and "tough as nails" according to a news release.

"We've been looking at Joel for some time now and he was a player we targeted for his toughness and energy," general manager Garth Snow said. "He's someone who will help our organization be stronger in those areas."

Rechlicz split this season between the AHL Albany River Rats and Kalamazoo of the IHL.
