Hunter inked long-term

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Trent Hunter signed a five-year, $10 million contract extension with the New York Islanders oyesterday.

Hunter will earn $2 million US per season through 2012-13. He is making $1.55 million this season and was set to become an unrestricted free agent on July 1. The Islanders completed the deal ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline.

"This is what I was determined to see happen all along -- a long-term deal," Hunter said in a release. "The contract got done today with a lot of respect and class shown on both sides, so now it's back to the race for the playoffs."

Hunter has eight goals and 32 points in 62 games.

KOSTOPOULOS OFF HOOK

TAMPA, Fla. -- No charges will be filed against Montreal Canadiens forward Tom Kostopoulos from an incident with police outside a Tampa night club on Feb. 11, the Tampa Tribune has reported.

Kostopoulos was charged last week with resisting a police officer, a misdemeanour, in an early morning dispute outside the Whiskey Park club.

A charge against rookie defenceman Ryan O'Byrne for felony grand theft for allegedly stealing a women's purse is still pending, the report said.

Colorado forward Paul Stastny, sidelined five weeks after an appendectomy, has been activated. Stastny had his appendix removed Jan. 17, and missed 15 games. He also missed the NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta ... Bob Gainey's No. 23 will be hoisted to the rafters of the Bell Centre tonight before Montreal's game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The current Habs general manager will be the 14th player to have his jersey retired by the Canadiens.
