Don't bet on Brent

UNIONDALE, N.Y. -- Brent Sutter's name is on everyone's lips regarding the vacant GM and coaching jobs on Long Island.

But his brother, Flames GM/head coach Darryl Sutter, isn't sure the Red Deer Rebels owner/GM/head coach would want the gig.

Brent's interest in the jobs is "probably zero, or as close to it as you can get," Darryl said yesterday.

Brent, who has guided Canada to two straight world junior crowns on top of a Memorial Cup, appears to be the front-runner for the jobs made vacant yesterday when Mike Milbury announced he'd be relinquishing his duties as GM as soon as possible and Steve Stirling had been fired as head coach.

Brent, a former Islanders captain who won Stanley Cups with the team in 1982 and 1983, said yesterday he told his players: "I'm your head coach from here until the rest of the year."

Sutter's son, Brandon, and his nephew, Darryl's son Brett, are playing on the team this year.

"For me to ever leave doing what I'm doing, it would have to be something that totally, totally made sense for me to do," Sutter said.

Darryl shot down the theory Brent would want to renew his relationship with his former NHL club.

"His ties are to Mr. Torrey and Mr. Arbour," Darryl said, referring to former Islanders GM Bill Torrey and head coach Al Arbour.
