Ryan o'Marra is bound to cause the New York Islanders some awkward travel moments if he makes the National Hockey League.
Their first-round pick from the Erie Otters was born in Tokyo, Japan, to Canadian parents who were working in that country in 1987.
"I always get the second look when I cross the border -- this Irish-Catholic kid with Japan on my birth certificate," O'Marra said.
The O'Marra's returned to Toronto in 1988.
"Unfortunately, I didn't get (Japanese) citizenship so I can't play for their national team," O'Marra said jokingly. "I'm sure I could push for it. I would definitely be one of their taller guys.
"I just have pictures of Japan, but I hope to go back some day."
