Defenceman Andrei Markov would like to avoid free agency and stay with the Montreal Canadiens.

Markov, who is in the final year of a three-year, $17.25 million deal he signed with the Habs in 2011, says he has started negotiations on a new contract but talks are only at the preliminary stage.

"Maybe I'm going to sign another contract tomorrow," Markov told the Montreal Gazette. "Maybe in another month. We'll see. I'd like to stay here for the rest of my career. You can see some players in their 40s who still play. I don't want to think that far. Whatever is going to happen tomorrow will happen tomorrow."

When, or if, Markov signs, he will have no one to blame for the terms of the deal. He recently parted company with his agent, Don Meehan of Newport Sports, and will negotiate the deal on his own.

Markov, 35, has five goals and 19 assists in 46 games this season.
