Montreal Canadiens forward Ryan White was suspended five games by the NHL on Wednesday.

The league determined White’s hit on Philadelphia Flyers defenceman Kent Huskins Monday night was an illegal check to the head.

“As White approached Huskins,” NHL disciplinary Brendan Shanahan explained, “his timing and his route were off.

Instead of making a legal, full body check, he recklessly picked Huskins’ head with his shoulder, making it the principal point of contact.”

The incident occurred during the first period of the Flyers' 7-3 win in Montreal.

White, who received a match penalty for the hit, will be eligible to return to the Habs' lineup on April 27 in Toronto, their last game of the regular season.
