Reports: Gomez on his way out of Montreal
By QMI AGENCY

The Montreal Canadiens are poised to eat Scott Gomez's rich contract, according to reports out of La Belle Province.

The Canadiens plan to buy out the remaining two years on the deal that that owes Gomez another $10 million. According to the current collective bargaining agreement, they'd have to pay the under-achieving forward two-thirds of the salary cap hit ($7.3 million annually) to get out from under the seven-year, $51 million deal he signed with the New York Rangers in 2007.

By buying Gomez out, the Canadiens could spread his remaining cap hit over four years, rather than two. That would help ease the pain of having a two-goal player -- Gomez had two goals and nine assists in 38 games this season -- carry such a massive cap hit.
