Andrei Markov skated Tuesday for the first time since he underwent arthroscopic surgery to remove debris on the inside of his right knee Dec. 5.

The Montreal Canadiens defenceman, who has been out all season, skated for 15 minutes before the team's practice in Brossard.

Markov, originally expected to be out a further four to six weeks after having surgery, has been off skates for eight weeks. No date for a possible return has been mentioned.

Markov signed a three-year, $17.25 million contract in June, but has not played since Nov. 13, 2010, when he was hit by Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Injured Canadiens forward Travis Moen will undergo more testing, which could mean he'll be out longer than expected.
