Former Montreal Canadiens star Guy Lafleur believes coach Jacques Martin was never in danger of losing his job despite the team's early struggles.

While the Canadiens had only one win in their first eight games and many fans pushed for Martin's dismissal. Lafleur said the coach is too well established in Montreal to be canned in the first month of the season. He said the off-season departure of popular assistant coach Kirk Muller was merely a coincidence.

Since the poor start the Habs have won three in a row,

"They stopped the bleeding and that's important," Lafleur said, adding that the Canadiens needed to build some chemistry.

The Canadiens play Friday in Ottawa against the Senators and Saturday in New York against the Rangers.
