Montreal - Montreal Canadiens defenseman Andrei Markov is expected to be out an extended period of time with a right knee injury suffered in Saturday's game against Carolina.

Markov was playing in just his seventh game since returning to the lineup on October 30. He had missed the first three weeks of the season recovering from surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee, an injury he sustained during the second round of the playoffs against Pittsburgh.

The 31-year-old Russian has one goal and two assists this season. Injuries limited Markov to a career-low 45 games in 2009-10.
