MONTREAL -- Montreal Canadiens forward Michael Cammalleri has been suspended one game for slashing New York Islanders rookie Nino Niederreiter Saturday in Quebec City.

The suspension, announced Monday by the National Hockey League, means Cammalleri won't be in uniform for his team's regular-season opener Thursday against the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.

The winger slashed Niederreiter on the back of the left leg late in the second period of Montreal's final pre-season game, which the Canadiens won 7-2.

Niederreiter left the game with a bruised calf and Cammalleri was given a slashing major and game misconduct. The incident followed what Habs coach Jacques Martin called a blindside hit by Niederreiter on Cammalleri earlier in the game.

Cammalleri was the Canadiens' third-leading scorer last season with 50 points.
