The Montreal Canadiens will be without defenceman Andrei Markov for four months.

The Habs announced that the all-star blue-liner underwent surgery on Thursday night in Toronto to repair a lacerated tendon in his ankle after he was cut by goaltender Carey Price's skate blade in their season opener against the Maple Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.

He was released from hospital Friday and will return to Montreal.

In 2008-09, Markov enjoyed a career-year, posting 64 points before missing the last four games of the season plus the playoffs with a knee injury.
