CALEDON -- The only "C" you will find on a Habs jersey tonight will be the one on the team's famous logo.

Just like the Maple Leafs, the Canadiens decided not to name a captain in time for tonight's season opener at the ACC.

Because of all the new faces in the Habs' revamped lineup, coach Jacques Martin and GM Bob Gainey opted to wait, even though many players figured newcomer Brian Gionta would get the nod.

It marks the first time in the 100-year history of the franchise that a Canadiens player will not be designated as captain.

"The fact that we don't have a captain should not be construed that we do not feel we have leaders," Martin said. "We have plenty."

Martin denied reports that defenceman Andrei Markov had been offered the captaincy last month and turned it down.
