Leafs or Habs should have signed Selanne

Maybe next time, someone should listen to Mats Sundin.

Or maybe next time, the Maple Leafs captain should step out of character and be more forceful with his opinions.

When the NHL lockout ended last summer and new world free agency arrived, Sundin had an idea to improve the Leafs and improve his line all at the same time. He wanted the team to sign free agent, Teemu Selanne.

He wasn't alone. Saku Koivu had similar thoughts in Montreal. He thought Selanne, his linemate from the Finnish national team, would be a perfect addition to the Canadiens.

In the end, there was almost no bidding war for Selanne, who signed with the Anaheim Mighty Ducks and at age 36, scored 40 goals for the first time in six seasons.

The Leafs signed seven free-agents for more than Selanne cost the Mighty Ducks. It may not be his style, but somewhere Sundin has to be thinking, "I told you so."

THIS AND THAT

Don't know if this is clever marketing or just plain sad: Available at better golf stores, Maple Leafs golf balls. What they don't tell you: They get lost easily ... Serena Williams says she won't play the French Open or Wimbledon but hopes to return by mid-summer, just in time to come up with an excuse to pull out of Canada's lone pro tournament in Montreal ... Joe Thornton's next playoff goal will be his first of this Stanley Cup season ... First Aki Berg, now Hootie Johnson. All the great punchlines are disappearing ... The Blue Jays are hanging tough without middle relief or a middle infield ... Cam Ward is no flash in the pan. Earlier this season, the Carolina Hurricanes goalie was on Team Canada's Olympic radar. A few years back, he was the MVP of the Western Hockey League. For him, it was only a matter of when ... All of a sudden Dominik Hasek's health is a matter of national significance ... The worst kept secret in Toronto should be confirmed in a matter of days when Paul Maurice is named coach of the Leafs .

HEAR AND THERE

Admit it, you had no idea Fernando Pisani was this kind of player prior to the start of the playoffs ... Same for Anaheim defenceman Francois Beauchemin, whom the Ducks stole from Columbus for former star Sergei Fedorov, and Colorado veteran Andrew Brunette ... Just wondering: Is Maxim Afinogenov just Sergei Berezin with hockey sense? ... The Marlies would have sold more tickets for more games, regular season and playoffs, had they not tried to gouge the public by over-pricing minor-league hockey games ... When the Raptors fired Rob Babcock, one of the first to say he would be interested if approached was Denver GM Kiki Vandeweghe. Now we know why: Vandeweghe was fired Friday by the Denver Nuggets ... Not just another cologne or another Colon: Gustavo Chacin ... Love those Johnny Damon T-shirts: Looks like Jesus. Acts like Judas. Throws like Mary ... Omar Vizquel will be on my Hall of Fame ballot as soon as he becomes eligible. He's the second best shortstop I've seen.

SCENE AND HEARD

Steve Yzerman, almost certain to retire, was never better than when he had to carry Red Wings teams in the early '80s, long before Detroit became a contender ... Can't remember a year like this one, where the first round of the NBA playoffs trumped the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs ... What was worse? The New York-New Jersey series or Game 7 of Calgary-Anaheim? ... Once again, the hockey writers and the GMs disagree: That's how Henrik Lundqvist is voted among top three goalies in the NHL but not among top three rookies ... Went out for dinner and had terribly slow service: Our waiter looked a lot like Jason Allison ... The convention of coaches at Pat Marsden's funeral included Pat Quinn, Pinball Clemons and Leo Cahill ... With all the openings for general managers, shouldn't somebody be considering Craig Button, a bright guy who is too smart to play second or third banana to John Ferguson ... I know college is expensive, but I never thought an extra year at USC would end up costing Matt Leinart $10 million US ... It isn't Koivu's responsibility to learn to speak French just because he happens to be the captain of the Montreal Canadiens.

AND ANOTHER THING

The Blue Jays left field platoon of Reed Johnson and Frank Catalanotto is outperforming Manny Ramirez in the early going. The home run and RBI numbers are similar but Johnson and Catalanotto have scored 29 runs, almost twice as many as Ramirez ... The post-game news conference in Ottawa Friday night would have been a lot more twisted had John Tortorella been coaching the Senators ... A dozen television crews, 10 still photographers, NFL Films, the NFL networks and all kinds of reporters showed up to document Vince Young's first day of rookie camp with the Tennessee Titans. Wonder what they'll do on Day 2 ... You won't find nicer people in sports than Vinnie Chulk and Josh Towers. And if they continue as they are, you won't find nicer people out of sports than them ... Has the last-place horse in the Kentucky Derby finished the race yet? ... This still hurts: All the Raptors have to show for Vince Carter is Joey Graham, a rookie with little upside, and Eric Williams, a malcontent cashing a cheque instead of leaving town ... And hey, whatever became of Mark LaForest?
