MINNEAPOLIS - The Minnesota Wild are putting a lot of eggs into Dany Heatley’s basket.

Having traded for the two-time 50-goal scorer this off season, the Wild are hoping Heatley can bounce back from a sub-par season by his standards in San Jose.

So far in training camp, things have looked good.

“He’s been great,” said the Wild’s rookie head coach Mike Yeo. “Right from Day 1, he’s really embraced a leadership role on our team. For me, leadership is more than just saying the right things and being a rah-rah guy, leadership is going out day in and day out and doing the right things.

“When you step over the boards in a game you’re going to show guys what you’re supposed to be doing, no matter what the situation is. I always believe that guys like that, whether they want to lead or not, they’re always leading. All eyes go to Dany Heatley when he steps on the ice, all eyes are going to see how he’s doing things. If he’s doing things the right way, then guys are going to follow.”

Heading into Friday’s game against the Edmonton Oilers, Heatley had two goals and six points in three exhibition contests.

Last season, Heatley finished with 26 goals and 38 assists for 64 points in 80 games with the Sharks.

“I think he’s having fun right now, he’s really fit in well with the group, the guys have a lot of respect for him and he’s been a good voice in the locker room,” Yeo said. “But the biggest thing is the way he’s gone out and done it, the way he’s gone out and led as far as his play on the ice and his work-ethic in practice. We’ve all been very impressed.”
